In Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (POK), five nations — China, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Turkey and and Kuwait — are working on the reconstruction of earthquake-hit areas, especially in the capital of Muzaffarabad city.

The region had been devastated in the 2005 earthquake.

About 3,000 Chinese workers and 300 from South Korea are currently deployed in PoK to help rebuild schools, colleges, mosques and even hydropower projects, while Saudi Arabia is helping rebuild the university campus, The Economic Times reported.

South Koreans have already completed work on two 100 MW projects, while China is building a 1100 MW Neelum-Jhelum Hydropower power project on the Jhelum river, the report said.

Increasing Chinese presence in PoK, and the strengthening relations between the two countries has been a concern for India.

Last month, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar had said that India had asked China to stop its activities in PoK.

The report of presence of China and other countries in Pakistan occupied Kashmir comes amidst news of residents of PoK reportedly expressing their wish to be a part of India.

PoK residents have reportedly grown weary of increasing extremism in Pakistan and have been impressed by the Modi government’s work, Zee News had reported, citing Moulana Syed Athar Hussain Dehlavi, Chairman of the Anjuman Minhaj-e-Rasool,  who had toured the region.
