Tribute to Dr Shakeel Auj
Tuesday, September 15, 2015 – Karachi—Federal Urdu University (FUU) Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof. Dr Suleman D. Muhammad said that the murder of a scholar is the murder of education. Educated society develops only when one’s opinion is accepted or rejected with reasoning. The vision and ideas of Prof. Dr Shakeel Auj Shaheed are still alive. He had a critical approach towards the society and societal norms. He would be remembered always.
He was addressing in an event on the first death anniversary of Shaheed Shakeel Auj titled “ Auj from pinnacle of knowledge to the wave of blood”. Notable dignitaries and faculty members present were Dean Faculty of Social Sciences Prof. Dr Moonis Ahmar, Prof. Dr Jamil Kazmi, Prof. Dr Tahir Masood, Prof. Dr Abid Azhar, Prof. Dr Abid Hasnain, Muhammad Jibran Nasir and Wusatullah Khan.
President Karachi University Teachers’ Society Prof. Dr Jamil Kazmi said that universities are the hub of academia and critical thinking. One year has passed and it was an indeed a painful period.
The efforts laid down to carry forward the academic mission of Shakeel Auj Shaheed by of his sons Dr Hassan Auj and Yamman Auj are commendable. Karachi University Teachers’ Society raised a strong voice over the killing of Dr Shakeel Auj as well as Dr Waheedur Rehman, fully supported and cooperated with the law enforcing agencies for bringing the culprits to justice.
Prof. Dr Tahir Masood said that Dr Shakeel Auj was one of his dearest friends and he was the person who was sitting beside him when he was killed.
He loved knowledge and served his life propagating the message of peace and knowledge. His research work was concrete and never quoted or gave opinion about anything without research.
He was awarded Sitara-e Imtiaz by the government due to his academic achievements, which is indeed a great honor for University of Karachi. Renowned Columnist Wusatullah Khan said that Dr Auj was a self-made person.
He not only criticized the societal norms but also proved his words and opinion with reasoning. Islam gives the lesson of tolerance and peace.
